Welcome to Beat Feet!

Below you’ll find a comprehensive calendar of running races taking place in the Grand Strand and nearby areas. You’ll find their Descriptions, Web Sites, Results and more. This calendar will be updated constantly as new race information occurs and if you’d like to be occasionally notified of new races or important updates, sign up via the box on the right sidebar.

This list includes every race there is within the triangle of Georgetown in the South, Ocean Isle, NC in the North and Conway to the West. For a race to be listed that’s outside of that triangle it has to be unique, like the Cooper River Bridge Run in Charleston or special, like the Boston Marathon.

To search for a race hit the “control” key and “F” and then type in a few words and it will bring you to the text on this page. (On a Mac hit Command+F).

Why not check out the tabs at the top and explore the local race series or do a group run.

I’ve combed around numerous places to take a race calendar that was scattered across the web to amass this comprehensive list. However if you happen to know of a race nearby that’s not listed here, and it’s worthy of inclusion based on the above criteria, then drop me a comment on the “Comments/Questions” page or shoot me an e-mail and I’ll check it out.

Also if you’re a race committee member and you want to provide me with race information you can e-mail an attachment or link to Ray Holt at bigorange44@aol.com

There are over 125 races here so as you can see the running explosion has hit the beach. Join the Grand Strand Running Club and catch a piece of the action. Here’s their facebook page.

And get fitted for a good pair of running shoes at the Black Bog Running Company in Myrtle beach. Here’s their facebook page.

So find your race here, then go train it, race it, then check back here after for your Results.

Now go BEAT FEET (you know…. GO RUN!)

We’ll see you out there!

-Ray Holt

FEBRUARY

Krispy Kreme Challenge 5 Mile in Raleigh, N.C. on Saturday 2/9/13@ 8:30am

This “race” raised $100,000 for the local children’s hospital in 2011! They get over 7,000 runners for this one. It’s run by the students of N.C. State. It started with a dozen participants on a dare in 2004. You have to run from the belltower on campus to the Krispy Kreme on Peace Street (about 2.5 miles), consume 12 glazed donuts as fast as you can, then run back 2.5 miles. How many calories will you consume? 2,400. How many will you burn running? 800. Do the math! The challenge, outside of the obvious, is to do all this under 1 hour. You may race this without the challenge of eating the donuts, and you still get a box of donuts to take home, but you receive no glory. You may also race as a team.

This is a mud run with over a dozen obstacles and over 100 zombies. This is just North of Raleigh. You will start the race with 3 health flags. If you finish the race with no flags, your race time will be “un-official” and you will be “infected” with the zombie virus for the rest of your life. If you need a health boost (a flag), look for a roving medic who will have you perform an exercise for a flag. Run solo or as a team of 4. Rather be a zombie? Well you can do that too! A free beer and a race party awaits you after. Also after you finish, feel free to grab a paint gun and have at the zombies ($5 for 20 shots)! 14 and over to participate as a racer or zombie.

GoRuck Challenge Adventure Event 15-20 miles over 8-10 hours in Myrtle Beach on Saturday 6/7/13 @ 9pm

Wow, this one is intense mentally and physically. By far the most challenging event I have on this calendar. The inspiration for this one comes from Special Forces training, in fact it’s put on and led by Green Berets, but the majority of participants are civilian. It’s an event never a race. To finish is the challenge. You will come with 3-4 bricks depending on your weight and you will carry those in a backpack throughout the challenge. This is a team race made up of the 30 or so participants that sign up for your date. You will start and progress through and finish together. You will complete challenges along the way based on your strengths and weaknesses. The team will decide what each individual does as you go along. There’s a 98% finish rate. It’s described as more mental than physical. There are local Cross Fit organizations you can hook up with to train for this event. It’s literally a world wide event. Every course is different depending on the City it’s hosted in.

Tough Mudder 10-12 miles in Charlotte, NC on Saturday 11/2/13 and Sunday 11/3/13 times depending on your wave

This is a personal challenge like no other that takes place in multiple locations throughout the country, the closest to Myrtle Beach is the Charlotte race. This is a mud run on steroids with 20-25 obstacles designed by British Special Forces. For example…..fight your way through fire, jump 15 ft into freezing cold water, and struggle your way through 10,000 volts of electricity. Tough mudders don’t compare times (in fact they don’t even time you except for a few that qualify for a special race). Also mudders don’t brag, they just acheive. Simply finishing is a badge of honor, if you’re athletic and tough enough to be one of the 78% that typically finish this challenge. The average mudder will finish in 2.25 hours. You can join as a team (teams over 5 members will get a discount), but even if you’re an individual mudder, your fellow mudders will help you through the course, that’s just the way it is. Lot’s of videos on their web site to get an idea of the obstacles. The after party has beer (one free and you can’t bring your own), music, food and free tattoos. Proceeds to the Wounded Warrior Project. Awards for fastest, best costumes, best mullet and best mohawk (free head shaves too). You must be 18 to participate. You’ll get a shirt, a sweatband and the after party. Spectators must buy a spectator ticket.

About Ray

I am the former President and founder of the Lake Effect Run Club in Syracuse, NY. Now that I've moved to Myrtle Beach, I not only got rid of all my running gloves, but I hope to take advantage of the longer running season of the Grand Strand. This race calendar, Beat Feet, which I maintain, is simply my way of giving back what the sport of running has given me.
